Please note: As of July 1, 2010, visits to Denney Ranch 2 Nature Preserve are by advance reservation only.
We—Deborah Douglas and Thomas Fisher—are the stewards of Denney Ranch 2, a wildlife-managed area at the edge of the Texas Hill Country which is open on Saturday (and at other times by appointment). We live on the ranch, along with our dogs and chickens. We hope to cross paths with you at some point during your visit.
A visitor parking lot is just inside the front gate; however, if you prefer, you can drive—slowly, please, watching out for our free-range chickens—a short distance to the main building and park near the clothesline.
The Visitor Table is near the main building. It has a sign-in sheet, trail maps (prepared by David Bogaert, see below), and a wooden cigar box that holds a little cash (for making change). We ask that all visitors add $5 to the cigar box; however, if you don’t want to do this, that’s okay. We’re not mean.
A nice, clean restroom is just inside the garage. Entry is on the south side of the main building—the side with the porch which faces away from the road.
Denney Ranch 2 has four miles of well-maintained, relatively flat trails that pass along the banks of seasonal Allen Creek and through grassy fields, live oak mottes, and stands of native trees.
We have established several feeding and watering stations for birds and other wildlife. Nearby benches allow you to relax while you watch and listen for birds. Lastly, color-coded wooden stakes are strategically located beside the paths so that, with the help of David Bogaert’s precise and beautiful map, you will always know exactly where you are.
